2027 Elections: INEC Warns Court Rulings Could Disrupt Poll Preparations
By Abdulahi Musa
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised concerns that court judgments and legal disputes could pose serious challenges to preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The electoral body warned that frequent and last-minute court decisions on candidate selection, party primaries, and other pre-election matters often disrupt its planning timelines and operational processes.
INEC explained that such rulings, especially when delivered close to election periods, can force sudden changes to ballots, voter lists, and logistics arrangements, thereby increasing pressure on election officials.
The Commission called for more timely resolution of electoral disputes, urging political parties and stakeholders to ensure strict compliance with electoral guidelines to reduce unnecessary litigation.
It added that a stable legal environment is crucial for smooth election planning, effective deployment of resources, and the overall credibility of the electoral process.
INEC stressed that while it respects the judiciary’s role, better coordination and adherence to timelines would significantly improve the conduct of future elections, including the 2027 polls.
