Defence Minister Raises Alarm Over Local Informants Fueling Terror Operations
By Abdulahi Musa
The Minister of Defence has raised alarm over the growing role of local informants in aiding terrorist activities across parts of Nigeria, describing the development as a major setback in ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
According to the minister, intelligence reports and field assessments indicate that some individuals within affected communities are actively providing terrorists with vital information, including troop movements, operational plans, and access routes, thereby strengthening their ability to carry out attacks.
He explained that these informants act as a critical support network for terror groups, supplying them with real-time intelligence that undermines military operations and exposes security personnel to ambushes and coordinated strikes.
The defence minister noted that without the cooperation of such internal collaborators, terrorist groups would struggle to sustain their operations, as their activities heavily depend on local knowledge and logistical support from within communities.
He further stressed that the government is intensifying efforts to disrupt these networks through improved intelligence gathering, community engagement, and strengthened collaboration between security agencies.
The minister also called on citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, warning that those found collaborating with criminal elements would face the full weight of the law.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces to ending terrorism in the country, stating that cutting off informants and logistical support remains key to achieving lasting peace and security.
