Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has arrived in Doha, Qatar, to officially begin his assignment as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Gulf nation.
Yakubu, who completed his tenure as Nigeria’s electoral chief in 2025, was appointed ambassador by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of a broader diplomatic posting exercise. His arrival in Doha marks a transition from electoral administration to diplomatic service.
Upon landing in the Qatari capital, the new Nigerian envoy was received by Ambassador Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro, Director of the Protocol Department at Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The reception was attended by 13 African ambassadors, Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Dr. Philip Mshelbila, and President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Qatar, Michael Ndukaihe Ihekwaba.
The warm reception highlights the importance attached to Nigeria’s diplomatic presence in Qatar and the expectations surrounding Yakubu’s new role. Analysts believe his posting comes at a crucial time as Nigeria seeks to strengthen economic, energy, and investment ties with the Gulf state.
As ambassador, Yakubu is expected to focus on deepening bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and Qatar, particularly in areas such as energy, trade, investment, and diaspora relations. Nigeria and Qatar are both major players in the global gas sector, making energy collaboration a key component of the diplomatic agenda.
His appointment represents a significant shift in his public service career, moving from overseeing Nigeria’s elections to representing the country’s interests in one of the Middle East’s most strategically important nations.
