The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the indefinite suspension of the Office of the Leader of the movement and the position of Director of Radio Biafra, both of which were previously occupied by its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The decision was disclosed in a statement issued by the group's Directorate of State (DOS) and signed by its head, Chikadibia Edoziem. According to the leadership, the move takes immediate effect and is aimed at protecting the organization's operations, members, and overall mission.

IPOB said the suspension became necessary to prevent unauthorized individuals or groups from acting in the name of the movement or claiming legitimacy from the suspended offices. The group stressed that any actions carried out under the authority of the now-suspended offices would not be recognized as official IPOB activities.

The Directorate also expressed concerns over what it described as reckless actions and statements that could expose members to security risks, including arrests and other consequences. It maintained that the measure would help safeguard members and preserve the organization's objectives.

According to the statement, the decision followed a meeting of the Directorate held on June 17, 2026, where members resolved that the suspension was necessary for the continued stability of the movement. The group reiterated that IPOB remains a collective self-determination organization and not one driven by any single individual.

The development comes amid an apparent leadership dispute within the organization. Earlier this week, reports emerged that Kanu had dissolved the existing Directorate of State and inaugurated a new leadership structure headed by Chris Nwaọgụ. The Directorate, however, rejected any attempt to dissolve it, insisting that such actions are invalid and should be disregarded by members and supporters.

IPOB reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing its objectives through peaceful and non-violent means, stating that the welfare and safety of its members remain a top priority.
