Chairmen and councillors elected during the February 22, 2025 local government election in Osun State are set to resume official duties at their respective secretariats across the state's 30 local government areas and the Area Office on Thursday, June 19, 2026.

The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State Chapter, and Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government, Otunba Sarafadeen Abiodun Awotunde, following a recent court judgment that reaffirmed the validity of the election and dismissed an application seeking tenure extension and the nullification of the poll.

Awotunde described the planned resumption as a significant milestone for democratic governance in the state, noting that it represents the restoration of a local government administration elected by the people through a legitimate electoral process.

According to him, the court's decision has once again validated the mandate freely given to the elected officials by the electorate, bringing clarity to the prolonged dispute over local government leadership in the state.

He assured residents that the returning chairmen and councillors would focus on delivering quality governance, accelerating grassroots development, and improving service delivery in their various communities.

"The resumption of duly elected officials is a victory for democracy, constitutional order, and the rule of law. Our administration remains committed to serving the people and fulfilling the promises made during the election," Awotunde stated.

The ALGON chairman also praised the judiciary for its role in resolving the dispute, describing the courts as steadfast defenders of justice and due process despite the controversies surrounding the matter.

He further commended the Nigeria Police Force, traditional rulers, and local government workers for maintaining peace and stability throughout the period of uncertainty, which he said lasted for more than 15 months.

Awotunde noted that their professionalism and commitment to public order prevented disruptions to governance and helped sustain stability across the state.

Addressing individuals he referred to as the "Yes/No Chairmen," he maintained that the latest judicial ruling had effectively invalidated their continued claim to local government offices.

He urged them to respect the court's decision and refrain from actions capable of disturbing public peace or disrupting local government administration.

According to him, any party dissatisfied with the judgment should pursue legal remedies through the appropriate appellate channels rather than engage in actions that could undermine democratic institutions.

Awotunde emphasized the need for peace, responsible leadership, and development across Osun State, stressing that local government administrations must now concentrate on delivering the dividends of democracy to the people.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the elected council officials to transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and sustainable grassroots development, while calling on residents to support their administrations in advancing community growth and welfare.

The resumption of the elected officials is expected to mark a new chapter in local government administration in Osun State following months of legal and political contestations over control of the councils.
