Renowned Actor Kola Oyewo Dies at 80

Nigeria’s entertainment and academic communities have been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor, dramatist, filmmaker, and scholar, Kola Oyewo, who passed away at the age of 80. His death was announced on Friday, June 12, 2026, drawing tributes from colleagues, students, and admirers across the country.
The renowned thespian was widely celebrated for his outstanding contributions to Yoruba theatre, Nollywood, and drama education. Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Oyewo began his acting career in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group before rising to national prominence through his portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s classic play, The Gods Are Not to Blame.
Throughout a career spanning more than six decades, he featured in several acclaimed productions, including Saworoide, Sango, and Super Story, earning a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most respected performers.
Beyond the stage and screen, Oyewo built an impressive academic career. He obtained advanced degrees in Drama from the University of Ibadan and lectured at institutions including Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer's University, and Elizade University, where he mentored generations of theatre practitioners and scholars.
His passing comes barely three months after he celebrated his 80th birthday, an occasion marked by tributes from notable personalities, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who described him as a national treasure and a worthy ambassador of Yoruba theatre and Nigerian storytelling.
Tributes have continued to pour in, with many describing Oyewo as a cultural icon whose legacy in theatre, film, and academia will continue to inspire future generations. His remarkable body of work and dedication to preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage have secured his place among the country’s most influential creative figures.
