“Sanwo-Olu Orders Urgent Lagos Waste Clean-Up as Sanitation Crisis Worsens”

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered the immediate evacuation and intensified clearance of waste across Lagos State amid growing concerns over refuse accumulation in parts of the metropolis.

According to a statement released on Thursday by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gbenga Akosile, the directive followed complaints from residents about the worsening sanitation situation in some areas of the state.

The government acknowledged the challenges and assured Lagosians that urgent steps had been taken to restore normal waste collection services.

Sanwo-Olu directed relevant agencies, including the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), to immediately scale up operations and clear waste backlogs across affected communities.

The statement added that additional resources had been deployed, with private sector operators and environmental task forces mobilised to work round the clock to improve sanitation and waste disposal.

The government also noted that Lagos generates about 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, making it one of the highest waste-producing cities in Africa, stressing the need for sustained collaboration between residents and authorities.

While describing the situation as temporary, the state government said progress had already been recorded in several locations and assured that improvements would become more visible in the coming days.

Residents, market associations, and community leaders were urged to dispose of waste properly and avoid practices that obstruct drainage channels and designated collection points.
