Tinubu Urges Unity, Defends Reforms, Vows to Crush Terrorism

• President honours June 12 heroes, announces national awards and new university in Yar’Adua’s name

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening democracy, tackling insecurity, and advancing economic reforms, as Nigeria marked 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.


In his nationwide Democracy Day address, President Tinubu described June 12 as a sacred symbol of Nigeria’s democratic journey and paid tribute to the heroes and heroines whose sacrifices secured the freedoms Nigerians enjoy today.


The President urged Nigerians to remain united despite current challenges, insisting that democracy must not only guarantee political freedoms but also deliver economic prosperity, security, and opportunities for all citizens.


Tinubu disclosed that his administration had intensified efforts against terrorism and banditry, noting that more than 13,000 terrorists were neutralised in the past year while over 124,000 fighters and their dependents surrendered through Operation Safe Corridor since 2023.


According to him, terror-related deaths have declined significantly, while the Federal Government has committed a record N5.41 trillion to defence and security in the 2026 budget and approved the recruitment of over 50,000 additional police officers alongside thousands of military personnel.


Addressing the nation's economic outlook, the President defended ongoing reforms, stating that they were necessary to restore fiscal stability, attract investment, improve transparency, and strengthen public finances. He highlighted growth in non-oil exports, increased domestic refining capacity, agricultural investments, and efforts to reform the power sector through the Electricity Act.


The President acknowledged that many Nigerians continue to face economic hardship but assured citizens that his administration remains focused on reducing inflation, creating jobs, boosting food production, and improving living standards.


Ahead of forthcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states, Tinubu called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and political stakeholders to ensure peaceful, transparent, and credible polls, warning that democracy suffers when citizens lose confidence in the electoral process.


He also renewed his administration’s push for local government autonomy, describing effective grassroots governance as essential to national development and security.


As part of activities marking Democracy Day, the President announced the renaming of the Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology in honour of the late military officer and pro-democracy advocate.


Tinubu further unveiled a list of pro-democracy activists, journalists, politicians, professionals, and soldier-democrats who will receive national honours for their roles in the June 12 struggle and the restoration of democratic governance.


Concluding his address, the President urged Nigerians to reject division and despair, stressing that the nation's diversity remains its strength.


"June 12 reminds us that Nigerians do not break. We bend, we bleed, but we do not break," Tinubu declared.


The President wished Nigerians a Happy Democracy Day and called for renewed commitment to building a united, secure, and prosperous nation.
